Acupuncture is based upon a simple premise: we experience symptoms because energy is not moving freely through our body. The type and severity of symptoms is determined by the amount and type of blockage of the flow of energy, or as it is called in Chinese medicine, “qi.”
When employed by a trained acupuncturist, studies have shown acupuncture to work significantly better than placebo – and often better than medications – for a wide range of conditions and is often covered by many insurance plans.
Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with Chinese herbal formulas, another complex system of medicine that complements acupuncture very well.
Acupuncture visits generally last for 30-45 minutes. Typically, the first office visit will include extensive history and a focused physical exam. Lab work is often reviewed or ordered as necessary.
Depending upon the complexity of your case, the first visit might conclude with a treatment plan and follow-up instructions, or it might be the first of a series of visits necessary for gathering all the relevant information that allows for a comprehensive treatment program.
Acupuncture treatments are commonly incorporated into comprehensive treatment programs because they complement all naturopathic therapies that might be employed in your unique treatment.
Acupuncture is very effective in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including (but not limited to):
- low back pain
- hot flashes (menopausal)
- digestive issues
- chronic fatigue
- menstrual cramps
