Annual gynecological wellness exams: Are they really necessary?

At Nature Cures Clinic, our goal is to optimize your health and prevent future disease processes. Providing care while you are well is key to keeping you that way!

Most of us (okay, ALL of us) felt relief when the guidelines for the Papincolaou (pap) exams decreased from every year to the current recommendation of every 3-5 years. However, that does NOT mean the remainder of the annual wellness visit is obsolete!

There are many advantages to accessing your insurance benefits for preventative care:

  • Health screening – for high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis

  • Birth control – there are so many options, find the one that’s right for you

  • Concerns about your period – PMS, painful or heavy periods, irregular menses

  • Cancer screening – cervical, breast and colon cancer screening

  • Issues with sex – painful intercourse, hormonal changes and sex

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) – get tested and learn about prevention

  • Nutritional counseling – we’ll figure out what works best for you

  • Preconception counseling – optimize your health before becoming pregnant

  • Depression and anxiety screening – common and sometimes serious illnesses

  • Focus your energy on health promotion and increased vitality, rather than treating symptoms after they manifest

  • Most insurance plans cover 100% of the costs for one wellness visit per plan year, which means the visit will likely be at no cost to you

Our practice is based on our relationships with our patients. We want to know you in sickness and in health! We want to know what’s important to you, what gets you out of bed every day, how you manage your various roles in life. These wellness visits help us to deliver patient-centered care, because should you come to us down the road with a specific issue, we already know who you are and what’s important to you.

Major professional organizations agree, too.  The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH), strongly recommend annual wellness visits.
