Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
A study involving 608 people over a period of five years showed that the people who had a higher intake of DHA and EPA, omega-3 fatty acids, experienced a slower rate of telomere shortening, a sign of cellular aging, than those with lower levels.

New evidence shows selenium and omega-3s prevent colon cancer
Monday, January 25th, 2010
In a randomized, placebo-controlled study including 411 men, it was shown that men who took selenium had a 40 percent reduced risk of developing colon cancer. In a similar study involving 1,878 men, it was shown that men who had the highest amount of omega-3 fatty acids intake also had a 40 percent reduced risk of developing colon cancer.

New Approach To Fighting Alzheimer’s Shows Potential In Clinical Trial
Saturday, January 9th, 2010
In a clinical trial involving 225 Alzheimer’s patients, a group of patients were given a natural cocktail containing B vitamins, phosopholipids and antioxidants. The patients who received the cocktail showed a significant improvement in verbal memory skills compared to the placebo group. These nutrients are believed to contribute to the formation of synapses, connections that are damaged in the progression of the disease.

Fish Oil: Cure-All?
Thursday, July 9th, 2009
There’s no supplement that can cure everything, but if the latest research is any indication, fish oil seems to come pretty close.
You’ve probably heard the claims that it can increase your baby’s brain function and promote a healthy pregnancy. But it doesn’t stop there!
The physicians at Nature Cures Clinic have access to much of the latest research about the use of supplements and how they can help you. And this week, we’ve gotten to see a whopping NINE new studies that promote the benefits of fish oil!
Here’s a glimpse into the latest findings: (more…)

Respiratory Infections in Children
Friday, November 7th, 2008
Children’s cough/cold medicine has been shown to be more dangerous than helpful. But a recent study suggests that there are other kinds of therapies that will benefit kids with colds.
A recent study in the Journal of Pediatrics found that school-aged children supplemented with fish oil experienced upper respiratory infections with less frequency. In addition, those who did get a cold had it for a shorter length of time when compared to kids not receiving the fish oil supplementation.
The general thought within the medical community is that, if there is no conventional therapy for a given problem, then there is no useful therapy. This is just one more example of a natural therapy that not only reduces illnesses in children, but will enhance their health overall.
Do we think that pediatricians across the country are going to start recommending fish oil supplements to children to prevent colds?

Fish Intake and Colorectal Cancer
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008
In a very large, long-term study of colorectal cancer, it was found
that intake of fish oil and dietary fish dramatically decreases the risk
of colorectal cancer. In this study, which monitored over 21,000
subjects for 22 years, it was found that those who consumed fish 5
times/week had a 40% reduction in colorectal cancer. In classic “let’s
understate the benefits of natural therapies” fashion, the authors
concluded, “Our results … suggest that intakes of fish and long-chain
omega-3 fatty acids from fish may decrease the risk for colorectal
cancer.” If a drug had this kind of protective effect, we’d all be
forced to take it as a matter of national security.

Plant Sterols, Fish Oil and Cardiovascular Disease
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008
A combination of two supplements can significantly improve total
cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL. Published in the Journal of
Nutrition, this study looked at 60 individuals with elevated lipids.
Those individuals who were given a combination of plant sterols and
omega-3 oils experienced a significant improvement in their lipid
profiles. Specifically, their total cholesterol dropped by over 13%,
their triglycerides fell by 25%, their LDL (“bad”) cholesterol fell by
over 12% and their HDL (“good”) cholesterol rose by over 8%.
These are precisely the changes that physicians want to see for
lowering an individual’s risk of cardiovascular disease.

Essential Fatty Acids and Depression
Sunday, June 5th, 2005
It is widely accepted that diet had a profound influence on health. The occurrence of the most significant chronic diseases in this country – cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes – are all significantly influenced by the diet. While the role of nutrition on the health of our bodies now makes regular headlines, the role of nutrition on mental health is less well known.
There are many reasons that an individual might experience depression. Stress, circumstances and traumas can all be causes. Conventional medicine also focuses extensively (almost exclusively) on the role of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Some of the most popular and profitable drugs are designed to increase the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine. (more…)

Fish Oil and Alzheimer’s
Sunday, March 27th, 2005
The essential fatty acids found in fish oil are vital to health. Research has shown that by getting enough of those fatty acids, DHA and EPA, in one’s diet, the risk of many chronic diseases drops dramatically. Now a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience illustrates yet another reason to include fish oil as part of your daily supplement plan.
Most Americans eat a diet deficient in essential fatty acids. These fats are needed for cardiovascular health, immune system health, brain function, and may other important functions in the body. This new research has found that a diet supplemented with DHA (decosahexanoic acid) protected mice from developing the brain plaques associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.
The amount of decrease was not small. (more…)
