High-sugar diet alters intestinal bacteria, making losing weight more difficult

Monday, December 21st, 2009

A recent study has found that a diet high in sugar has the powerful effect of being able to throw the good bacterial colonies in the gut out of balance.  Because this bacteria is essential for proper digestion and assimilation of nutrients, the entire body can become more susceptible to all sorts of diseases, including obesity.

Organic Food for Optimal Nutrition

Saturday, April 9th, 2005

Over the past 100 years, the very nature of food has been transformed. It used to be that a “whole food diet” – meaning that the foods eaten have not been processed in any way – was the only option. Today, the vast majority of the foods eaten have been processed, with nutrients taken out and various additives, flavorings, colors, preservatives, texturizers, fillers and binders added.

Just as importantly, almost all of the “unprocessed foods” sold in supermarkets today have been sprayed with various types of chemicals: herbicides, pesticides, artificial fertilizers, ripening retardants or enhancers, etc. While these chemicals may make vegetables last longer on store shelves, or make fruits more brightly colored, or prevent fruit from ripening before traveling thousands of miles to a store shelf, they also take a toll on the nutritional value of foods.

Fruits and vegetables grown in soil that has not had chemicals applied to hit, and that have not had chemicals sprayed on them, now get a special label: “organic.” Now research conducted in Europe suggests that organic food may help to lose weight, to improve immune function, and to enhance sleep. Anti-bacterial Chemicals in our Water

Monday, January 24th, 2005

Our society’s phobia of germs is coming back to haunt us.

A recent study conducted by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health has found something unsettling in our water. Anti-bacterial chemicals have been added to soaps, tissues, detergents and other products for years. Apparently, though, no one considered what became of those chemicals once they were put in the garbage.

The chemical used to fight the germs, called triclocarban, has been in use for over 50 years. The use of the chemical has been on the rise, as more and more products are marketed as helping to “fight infections” or “prevent disease.” Actually, a significant amount of research indicates that exposure to these anti-bacterial products make us more susceptible to infections. Is Disease Really in Your Genes?

Sunday, October 24th, 2004

A research team made up of government and non-government genetic researchers have published a study that casts yet more doubt on the role of our genes as a “master blueprint.” The study was done on mice, in which a seemingly tiny .085% of the entire genome was deleted. However, this amounts to 2.3 million individual pieces of genetic code.

What the researchers found was that even with this relatively enormous deletion of genetic code (by comparison, many diseases are attributed to a single piece of genetic code being deleted), there was no measurable difference between normal mice and the mice with the genetic deletions. Mice were compared in viability, growth rate, lifespan and other differences in cell chemistry.

Over the past several months there have been major changes in the idea that the genetic code is the ultimate control of what happens in cells, organs and bodies. This latest research is simply more reason to believe that genes do not determine everything, and if the current trend continues, science will discover that many other factors play a more important role in determine what happens in cells than genes.
