Podcast Resources

Statins Podcast

NOTE: We apologize that the Statins Podcast file transferred incorrectly and was cut off at about 4 minutes. It has been re-posted and can now be listened to in full. Sorry for the inconvenience.

A comprehensive review of the various studies on statins can be found here.

A website devoted to compiling the growing list of potential and documented risks associated with taking statins can be found here. This site links to both scientific and mainstream literature relevant to the dangers of taking statins.

Digestive Health Podcast

Look here for a great review of the role of acid in the stomach. Anyone taking antacids, H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors would be well served to read this article. It explains not only why stomach acid is important, but why symptoms of burning and reflux may not be due to excess acid.

Stomach acid is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12. B12 is vital in a wide range of functions in the body, and deficiency is associated with everything from gastritis to Alzheimer's.

The class of antacids called H2 blockers are now sold over-the-counter (Tagamet, Pepcid, and Zantac, for example). These drugs are specifically designed to inhibit the production of stomach acid. This increases the risk of inhibiting B12 absorption. For more information on the importance of B12 for health, see this article.

Depression Podcast

Several studies have demonstrated that aerobic exercise - even one short bout of exercise - can significantly reduce major depression. You can read the abstract of one study here.

There are several web pages that catalogue the reports of serious side-effects caused by antidepressant medications, such as the one found here. The most serious of these is a significantly increased risk of suicide, especially in those under the age of 18 who take these medications.

Nevertheless, the number of people under the age of 17 being prescribed antidepressants has grown dramatically, while the number of these individuals being referred for counseling has dropped at the same time.

Inflammation Podcast

There is a growing recognition of the role of chronic inflammation in the development of chronic diseases, including cancer, allergies and a wide range of other diseases.

A good summary of the role of inflammation in chronic disease can be found here.

There are many naturopathic approaches to lowering the overall level of inflammation in the body, and thereby lowering the risk of the diseases associated with chronic inflammation. There is probably no better way to lower inflammation than to engage in regular exercise.

Diabetes Podcast

The conventional medical world seems to be unable to see the forest for the trees when it comes to Adult Onset Diabetes (Type II diabetes, now considered "epidemic"). For example, note that in this summary, the section on the cause makes no mention of nutritional factors.

As we emphasized in our podcast, adult onset diabetes is the end stage of a process that begins with eating habits in childhood. A lifetime of cells being exposed to high levels of blood sugar leads to insulin resistance.

So how much sugar are we eating? Between the 1800s and 1990, the amount per person increased by over 120 pounds!.This is an enormous increase over a relatively brief period of time.

Diabetes is a disease that is all about blood sugar. Carbohydrates cause the fastest rise in blood sugar, followed by proteins, then dietary fats cause the slowest rise. However, the American Diebetes Association is still recommending that diabetics eat a diet that is made up primarily of carbohydrates!.

Flu and Avian Flu Podcast

Perhaps the most controversial statements we made in this podcast concerned the ties between Donald Rumsfeld and the drug Tamiflu. You can read more about that link here and in the links from that page.

Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, one of the nation's foremost researchers on the dangers of vaccinations, has created a web page devoted to exposing the hype surrounding bird flu.

Three physicians at Nature Cures Clinic, Drs. Greg Nigh, Greg Eckel and Rose Paisley, participate in Oregon AWARE, a national program designed to educate patients and physicians about the appropriate use of antibiotics in order to prevent antibiotic resistance.

We wrote a set of naturopathic protocols for the treatment of conditions that are, unfortunately, often treated with antibiotics. While we did not specifically write protocols for treatment of the flu, it is a viral disease that will not respond to antibiotic therapy. The treatment suggestions (this is a .pdf file requiring Adobe Acrobat to open) given for the common cold - another viral disease - are also appropriate for treatment of the flu.
