Listen to Vitamin D Podcast
Dr. Eckel and Dr. Nigh discuss what is arguably the most important nutrient that should be included in your diet. They will tell you specifically where you can find vitamin D sources, and which form is the more active, and therefore the one you should be putting into your body. From a naturopathic approach, Dr. Eckel and Dr. Nigh will tell you that they strongly disagree with what the government deems as an adequate vitamin D level for an individual. How much should you be taking and how high should your blood level be? They’ll discuss these issues, as well as many more surrounding vitamin D, some that may even surprise you.

“I can not tell you how refreshing it is to be seen as a person and not a disease.”
Monday, January 19th, 2009
I am a person with a physical disability. As other people living with disabilities know western conventional approaches to medicine often focus on “making you comfortable” and “masking your symptoms”. Too often I have felt with western medicine that my disability was perceived to be the root of any secondary ailment I might have.
When I first started seeing Dr. Nigh I suffered from debilitating respiratory infection associated with common colds and allergies. I have a reduced respiratory capacity do to my disability, and so a simple cold would leave me incapacitated for up to three weeks, dependent on a nebulizer every two hours to breath. Western Doctors would load me up with antibiotics and expectorants and I would suffer all winter long, lucky if I had a week or two before getting sick again.
When I began treatment with Dr. Nigh he not only helped to ease the the symptoms of what I was experiencing at the time he also spent valuable time working to develop regiments with me that would be preventative. He was mindful of my lifestyle needs and limitations yet at the same time treating each issue as a unique piece to the whole picture of me, with my disability being just one small piece. I can not tell you how refreshing it is to be seen as a person and not a disease.
I have continued to work with Dr. Nigh for over three years now and each year I have seen dramatic improvement in my health. If i do get sick I am sick for less time and do not need to rely on the nebulizer or oral steroids. I am currently halfway through the winter cold and flu season and have yet to get sick. For those of you who think there is no help out there other than “making you comfortable” I highly recommend Dr. Nigh to you!

Managed Back Pain & Sinus Infections – Testimonial for Dr. Nigh
Thursday, January 15th, 2009
I saw Dr. Nigh for acupuncture to relieve back pain. After suffering for two weeks, I saw him for the first time and I had immediate pain relief. I completed a questionnaire before my first appointment and indicated, in my response, that I had frequent sinus infections (every two months or so). At my first appointment Dr. Nigh asked me about the frequent infections and indicated that there were things we could try to help reduce the frequency.
After my back pain was manageable, Dr. Nigh suggested that I try “The Elimination Diet” to determine if my frequent sinus infections were caused by food. I was certainly skeptical and brushed it off initially. After giving it some thought, I asked to read a copy of the diet. I was intrigued and thought that if it didn’t help the sinus infections, I would still gain the knowledge of how food effects my body.
The impact of the diet was profound, and continues to be. I started the diet in April of 2009. It is now January 2010 and I haven’t had a single sinus infection since beginning the diet. The first 10 days were very challenging, but it has become a way of life and is nearly effortless now. Besides no sinus infections, I lost 25 pounds (and I was only about 5 pounds overweight to start with), I sleep better, I handle stress better and I have more energy than I ever have. I generally feel great. The written diet is very helpful and inspiring, but Dr. Nigh was helpful, via e-mail, when I would have questions about food, what was happening to my body, etc.
was just ignorant about the effects of food on my body. I would recommend seeing Dr. Nigh for an overall health assessment. He may see things that you cannot see yourself and help you understand why your body is doing what it does. He will take the time to listen to all of your concerns and guide you through a reasonable path to health without the use of drugs or medication.

“Instead of being bedridden and in pain, I am able to live an active healthy life”
Thursday, January 15th, 2009
I have had Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus and hypothyroidism for over 20 years. Although I had been doing fairly well, I had a severe MS flare in January 2009 that caused me to lose 6 weeks of work. I saw several conventional doctors, but my condition continued to worsen. I found Dr. Nigh through an internet search. I felt confident from my first visit because Dr. Nigh’s approach was so rational. Instead of stuffing me with pills, he ran more sensitive blood tests than I had ever had. He also suggested an elimination diet since MS patients often have “leaky gut” due to severe food allergies. I had been seeing doctors for thyroid medication for 35 years, but Dr. Nigh was the first to discover I had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This finally explained the extreme shifts in weight I had regularly experienced. Acupuncture and supplements slowed my symptoms. Once we had discovered the foods I was allergic to and eliminated them, my health rapidly improved. I’ve lost over 50 pounds, but more importantly, my thyroid is stable for the first time. Instead of being bedridden and in pain, I am able to live an active healthy life. I don’t think any of these dramatic improvements would be possible without Dr. Nigh’s expert assistance. In my opinion, he lives the Hippocratic Oath.

Naturopathic Approach to Maintaining a Healthy Brain
Friday, June 20th, 2008
Listen to Naturopathic Approach to Maintaining a Healthy Brain
In this podcast, Portland naturopathic doctors, Dr. Greg Eckel and Dr. Greg Nigh discuss various ways that we can maintain our brain health. They explain that memory decline is not just a “sign of aging”, but it’s a sign of not aging well and isn’t normal. A long life of oxidative stress, which the brain is especially vulnerable to, puts the brain in a position of being more prone to develop neurological diseases as we get older. Through a naturopathic approach, they’ll share with you many ways that we can protect our brains from this oxidative stress, leading to devastating disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, memory loss, and even strokes.

Thoughts on Peer Review
Thursday, May 22nd, 2008
Listen to Peer Review Podcast
In this podcast, Portland naturopathic doctors, Dr. Greg Eckel and Dr. Greg Nigh will discuss some of the politics and problems behind the process of “peer review”. Peer review is the process of subjecting an author’s scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are considered experts in the same field. But, they ask, how can peer review be considered fair and unbiased when a lot of these reviewers have conflicting interests, such as receiving incentives from companies that have financial ties to what is being reviewed? They discuss this, as well as many other flawed elements in the process of “peer review”.
