Fish Oil: Cure-All?

There’s no supplement that can cure everything, but if the latest research is any indication, fish oil seems to come pretty close.

You’ve probably heard the claims that it can increase your baby’s brain function and promote a healthy pregnancy. But it doesn’t stop there!

The physicians at Nature Cures Clinic have access to much of the latest research about the use of supplements and how they can help you. And this week, we’ve gotten to see a whopping NINE new studies that promote the benefits of fish oil!

Here’s a glimpse into the latest findings:

– Slowing Dementia:
A study following people 65 and older from various countries found that people who consumed fish had lower levels of dementia. The researchers say this is likely because of the brain-protecting elements in fish oil. Interestingly, the study also found that dementia tended to increase when the study participants ate other kinds of meat.

– An aid for your workout:
Researchers found great benefits when a group of healthy and fit men took Omega-3 fatty acids while undergoing a high-intensity exercise regimen. After taking the supplements for some time, the athletes’ fat levels had decreased much more than the group not taking supplements. On top of that, researchers found more anti-oxidant activity in the athletes taking the Omega-3’s.

– Lowering Cholesterol:
You knew this one, right? Researchers also studied middle-aged white and Japanese men to test the effects of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Both population groups were found to have lowered triglycerides after taking the supplements. The crux of the study is that Omega-3 and Omega-6 are beneficial for more than one population.

– And if you’re already taking cholesterol-lowering drugs:
New research shows Omega-3 fatty acids could be a great compliment to you, if you’re already taking statins to lower your cholesterol.

– Benefits for Type 2 Diabetics:

But wait! Not all fish are created equal!

You may have also heard that consuming fish oil can help you lower your blood pressure. But it turns out, the type of fish could make all the difference.

In this last study, researchers followed several groups of overweight young people who were restricting calories to lose weight. The groups ate one of four diets:

# Salmon three times a week
# Cod three times a week
# Fish oil capsules
# Sunflower oil capsules, no fish

When the study ended, the salmon and fish oil groups had significantly lower diastolic blood pressure than the cod group. And the participants who ate the least fish before the program seemed to have the greatest reduction in blood pressure when they started eating fish. The study indicates that fatty fish like salmon helps lower blood pressure more significantly than lean fish like cod.

So athletes, mothers, babies, diabetics, people struggling with weight problems, those with heart and cholesterol issues – it looks like just about everyone could benefit from fish oil supplements.
